So, as most of you should know, Halloween is coming up. Here in DC, apparently, the week before Halloween they prepare/begin the festivities by having a drag queen race down the street. Cut to last night.
One of my roommates and I head down to where the action is. She had been there earlier this same evening to go to the grocery store, and told me there were lots of people gathered around as drag queens danced in the street. Sounds like a good time to me. While headed there in the elevator, we met a girl who asked if we were going to the races. She said she couldn't make it, but would probably go to drag queen bingo afterwards which is every tuesday night [I've seen signs for this, but I still can't picture it in my head...]
And we're off! About two block beforehand I begin to hear the crowds... I can feel a distinct change in my pulse, as the excitement starts to reach me. The closer we get, the more excited I get: you know, the way I get at certain sporting events or the undie run. About a block before the action, we hear people counting down from ten... we run not to miss the race!!! But we missed it. And I'm not sure how much of a race it could have been since it ended in about 3.4 seconds. We then wandered through the massive crowd, searching for costumes and finding them here and there. The best ensemble had to be drag fanta girls.
All in all, I was very disappointed. What was missing from this celebration?? Where was the madness??? The reckless abandon found only in the young and/or disenfranchised??
What exactly was missing?? Was it alcohol?? California vibes?? All of the above?? Would it have been better if I had actually seen the short-lived race?? I just don't know. |
